These additions are required for the more effective

examination of luggage and personal effects of steamer passengers with a view to the detection of arms or other weapons which might be employed for the perpetration of piracies as in the recent case of the S. S. "Tai On". Cost 86,489.

I have to request your sanction by telegraph to

make these additions during the current year so as

to permit of the engagement of the men at the earliest possible date.

(e). An extra Station Coolie for No. 5 (Fire Brigade)

Station. There is only one at present, and there is more work than he can do. Cost £108.

(a). An European Assistant Engine Driver, Fire Brigade, is required for the lotor Tender. Cost $240. (b). Four house allowances of 85 per mensem for Chinese Sergeants, and 6 of £3 each for other ranke of the Water Police. Similar allowances have been approved this year for a certain number of Chinese in Land Force: see footnote 12 on page 48 of the Estimates for 1913, Cost $240.

(o). An extra Telephone allowance of 84 per mensem is

required for No. 7 Police Station. There are now 3 Sergeant Interpreters there instead of two. Coat
